Thanks to my nephew, Alex, I now have taco seasoning on hand at all times and can use as much or little depending on what I am making. Thank you Alex!!! (I think his wife ,Mary, may have helped a bit ) We used this recipe when the whole gang, vegan, non-vegan, picky and adventurous eaters were sharing a table at a family dinner while on vacation. It was wonderful!!! By the way….. does your family vacation together or do you have large groups around your dinner table? A taco bar is a great way to work around all those different appetites… from just cheese to the works. the kids had fun assembling their own creation as well. We have worked with a pasta bar and baked potato bar and now the infamous taco bar. (We even got in a sushi bar on the last vacation. Bamboo matts and chop sticks with little helpers that keep your sticks together made the evening meal an adventure and the kids LOVED IT!!! Keep the idea of a specialized bar in mind when you are planning a large get together…it won’t disappoint!!!
Ingredients:
1/2 c. chili powder
1/3 c. ground cumin
1/4 c. garlic powder
4 tsp. onion powder
8 tsp. dried oregano
2 tsp smoked paprika
8 tsp sea salt
2 tsp. cayenne pepper
COMBINE INGREDIENTS AND PLACE IN AN AIR-TIGHT CONTAINER FOR STORAGE.
If you are making taco meat:
cook the desired amount of ground beef and drain the fat (I use the IMPOSSIBLE burger meat)
Add 2-3 TBL of seasoning and 1/4 c. water per pound of meat
stir until thoroughly combined…lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes
- For a thicker sauce you can add 1 TBL. of flour ..or if you are gluten free add 1/2 TBL corn starch per pound of meat.
HINT: My daughter ordered little taco holders from Amazon for the kids around the table and adults that had trouble holding and assembling. It added color and fun and a whole lot less mess.
